Abdominal Wall Surgery

Robotic abdominal wall surgery in complex primary, recurrent, and incisional hernias, robotic platforms can provide enhanced visualization and articulated instrumentation for precise dissection, adhesiolysis, fascial closure, and mesh placement.

Careful preoperative planning, appropriate mesh selection and positioning, tension-free fascial reconstruction, meticulous tissue handling, and preservation of surrounding structures are central to achieving durable results. Robotic surgery can facilitate work in challenging anatomical planes while allowing controlled suturing and precise reconstruction through minimally invasive access. The ultimate goal is a repair that is anatomically sound, functionally effective, durable, and tailored to the individual patient. Every layer, every suture, and every aspect of mesh placement matters.

Colorectal

Robotic colorectal surgery brings together advanced technology, meticulous technique, and deep understanding of complex abdominal anatomy. In colon and rectal surgery, particularly within the confined pelvis, robotic platforms can provide precise dissection around critical structures while helping the surgeon preserve important nerves, vessels, and functional anatomy whenever clinically appropriate.

For rectal cancer surgery, the goal extends beyond removing the disease—it is about achieving sound oncological principles while striving to preserve function and quality of life. Perfection in robotic colorectal surgery is therefore not simply about completing a technically complex operation; it is about planning every step, respecting anatomy, achieving appropriate oncological clearance, and reconstructing with meticulous attention to detail.

Upper GI Surgery

Robotic upper GI surgery combines advanced visualization, to address complex conditions of the stomach, oesophagus, gastroesophageal junction, and upper abdominal organs. Robotic technology can provide enhanced dexterity and stable three-dimensional visualization, supporting meticulous dissection, intracorporeal suturing, reconstruction, and tissue handling.

For complex procedures such as robotic oesophagectomy, gastrectomy, and selected pancreatic and upper GI operations, the objective extends beyond technical completion—it is to achieve sound surgical principles while preserving function and minimizing unnecessary tissue trauma whenever appropriate. Perfection in robotic upper GI surgery is the pursuit of excellence at every stage.

My philosophy in robotic surgery goes beyond precision, performance, and perfection—it is about using technology with purpose, judgment, and responsibility to achieve what matters most: the best possible outcome for every patient. I believe robotics should expand the surgeon’s capabilities, not replace surgical expertise, enabling us to approach complex anatomy with greater control while preserving function, reducing unnecessary trauma, and striving for better recovery. True excellence lies not simply in performing a robotic procedure, but in knowing when robotics adds value, combining advanced technology with sound clinical judgment, meticulous technique, multidisciplinary collaboration, and compassionate patient-centred care. For me, robotic surgery is ultimately about innovation with purpose, complexity with confidence, and technology in the service of better human outcomes. Robotic Surgery Fellowship

Surgical Training

The Robotic Surgery Fellowship at Manipal Hospital Whitefield, Bengaluru is designed for surgeons seeking advanced, structured training in robotic-assisted gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery.

The fellowship combines high-volume clinical exposure, progressive operative responsibility, advanced robotic techniques, and multidisciplinary decision-making, with a strong emphasis on patient safety and surgical outcomes.

The program also encourages academic development, surgical innovation, research, teaching, and leadership, preparing fellows not merely to operate with a robot, but to become confident, independent robotic surgeons capable of building and leading advanced robotic surgery programs.

Fellows are evaluated throughout the program on robotic console skills, patient selection, operative planning, technical execution, intraoperative decision-making, complication management, postoperative care, communication, teaching, and academic contribution. Regular case reviews, operative assessments, feedback sessions, logbook evaluation, and milestone-based assessments help identify strengths and areas for improvement. By the completion of the fellowship, the fellow is expected to have developed advanced proficiency in robotic GI and colorectal surgery, with the ability to independently plan and perform appropriately selected complex procedures, anticipate and manage intraoperative challenges, and deliver safe, evidence-based patient care.

The aim is to graduate surgeons who are technically confident, clinically mature, academically engaged, and capable of contributing to or developing a high-quality robotic surgery program in their own institution.
